WHAT IS QIGONG?



The term “qigong” is a combination of two words: "qi," which means “subtle breath” or “vital energy,” and "gong," which translates to “skill cultivated through steady practice.” Together, the words describe an age-old TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) practice that harnesses the power of breath, movement, and intention to create health and balance within the body.


Qigong opens the flow of energy in meridians/energy channels used in acupuncture and Chinese medicine. It enhances our ability to feel the Life Force (Qi) underlying the physical world and to deepen our communication with it. A mind-body-heart practice that improves mental and physical health by integrating posture, movement, breathing technique, self-massage, sound, and focused intent.

Shibashi, also called “Taiji Qigong in 18 Movements”, is a set of individual Qigong exercises, that are practiced in a fluid, continuous manner. Shibashi combines elements from Yang style Tai Chi and breathing and movement exercises from Qigong and has been described as a gentle, beautiful and flowing Qigong exercise that is very deeply relaxing. It is suitable for all ages and has been shown to increase energetic vitality, rejuvenate the mind,, and gain more agility and flexibility.


Learn a series of 18 energy-enhancing exercises that co-ordinate movement with breathing and concentration. Other benefits include : stimulates Lungs, promotes and helps lift depression, relieves anxiety and headaches, strengthens Kidney, knees and legs, helps balance and improve blood pressure, strengthens the Heart and Lungs, opens and expand flow of energy in the chest.


Shibashi introduces the basic elements of weight shifting, coordination of leg and arm movements, along with controlled breathing. This makes it a perfect prelude to warm-up for other types of physical exercise. Unlike many exercises which stretch and stimulate the large muscle groups, Shibashi focuses on the smaller muscles, tendons and ligaments in order to promote the strong elastic forces of the body.


The gentle stretching and releasing, combined with deep relaxed breathing, encourages tension deep in the body tissues to soften and release.
