WHAT IS QIGONG?



The term “qigong” is a combination of two words: "qi," which means “subtle breath” or “vital energy,” and "gong," which translates to “skill cultivated through steady practice.” Together, the words describe an age-old TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) practice that harnesses the power of breath, movement, and intention to create health and balance within the body.


Qigong opens the flow of energy in meridians/energy channels used in acupuncture and Chinese medicine. It enhances our ability to feel the Life Force (Qi) underlying the physical world and to deepen our communication with it. A mind-body-heart practice that improves mental and physical health by integrating posture, movement, breathing technique, self-massage, sound, and focused intent.

There are many different forms of Qi Gong that celebrate the energy of animals, and one of these is called the Five Animal Frolics.The Five Animal Frolics is a complete Qigong exercise system created by Hua Tuo (CE 140 – 208), a famous Chinese physician. Just like how in the Five Elements QiGong, we seek to learn from the elements of metal, water, wood, fire, and earth in order to cultivate their positive qualities within us, similarly in five animal frolic qigong we bring our attention to the positive energetic gifts & wisdom of various animals focusing in particular on the tiger, deer, bear, monkey, and crane.


In essence, the Five Animal Frolics QiGong seeks to bring harmony within all of the body’s energy systems. Different parts of our body finding flow with one another instead of experiencing conflicting internal energies, the Five Animal Frolics helps practitioners become one cohesive being. This promotes equilibrium and balance within all parts of the body.


Not surprisingly, the Five Animal Frolics also called Five Animal Play is often described as a fun practice. Although the exercises offer some seriously powerful health benefits, they are playful and light. After all, animals move in some pretty creative ways.

What is Small Universe Qigong?



Small Universe Qigong works with the fundamental flows of energy within us, which are a reflection of the patterns we see all around us in the universe. The same intrinsic patterns of energy movement can be found at every level of existence, from galaxies, to planets, to individual organisms, and even individual cells and atoms. When we understand these flows, we can harmonize ourselves with the rhythms and patterns of nature, and find balance, health, and vitality.


In the Small Universe Qigong program you will learn four distinct but connected sets of Qigong practices (each a system of Qigong in itself) to harmonize yourself with the universal flow.



Waking the Qi



The exercises in this set ‘wake up’ our internal energy, activating the flow in preparation for other practices.



Twelve Rivers Qigong



This set works with the 12 organ meridians which flow like rivers through our bodies. Balancing these meridians balances the functions of our internal organs, and offers us deep insight into the relationship between our posture, emotions, and organ function.



Between Heaven and Earth



This set activates the 8 extraordinary meridians, the great ocean currents of energy within us. When these currents are active it makes us very stable and resilient, physically, mentally, and energetically. It also prepares us to open up our connection to the energy of Heaven and Earth so that we can let it flow through us, renewing our energy reserves and filling and strengthening our energy fields.



Enter The Flow



The exercises in this set are like working with the clouds and rain, ensuring that our energy moves smoothly to every cell of our body. We become more aware of our energy and develop habits of allowing it to flow freely in a wide variety of movements, so that every activity can become a kind of moving meditation, filled with awareness of the energy.



Each of these practices are powerful by themselves, but when combined they form a complete harmonious system: waking the energy, flowing it through the rivers of the organ meridians where it gathers in the dantien or the ocean of qi, activating the extraordinary meridians or the currents within the ocean, sending energy out into the field and then moving it freely like clouds and rain in our everyday movements.


In addition to these sets of exercises, to round out your understanding and skills as a qigong student (or practitioner), you will also learn powerful breathing exercises for developing a complete natural breath, and a series of qigong meditations to strengthen the connection between your mind and body and your ability to direct your internal energy.
